About the Thumbnail Resizer

What it does

YouTube has strict recommended dimensions for every image surface: 1280×720 for video thumbnails, 2560×1440 for the channel banner (with a safe zone of 1546×423 for TV-safe content), 800×800 for the profile picture, 1080×1920 for Shorts covers, and 1920×1080 for end-screen backgrounds. Getting these wrong means your art is stretched, cropped awkwardly by YouTube, or rejected outright.

Who uses it, and why

This browser-based resizer handles the conversion client-side — your image never leaves your computer. Drop any image, pick the YouTube surface, drag to position, and download a clean JPEG at the exact target resolution. Scroll-wheel zoom and a drag-to-crop interface mean you control exactly what part of the image fills each frame.

How it works

The tool outputs JPEG at 95% quality, which is the sweet spot for YouTube thumbnails — smaller file size than PNG (faster loading, better Core Web Vitals on any embed) while preserving thumbnail-level sharpness.

Frequently asked questions

What size should a YouTube thumbnail be?

YouTube's recommended thumbnail size is 1280×720 pixels (16:9 aspect ratio), with a maximum file size of 2MB. The minimum is 640×360, but any thumbnail you create should be 1280×720 to display sharply on all devices and in search results.

What are the YouTube channel banner dimensions?

The channel art file should be 2560×1440 pixels. The center 1546×423 pixels is the safe zone guaranteed to display on all devices. Content outside that zone may be cropped on mobile and tablet.

What size should my YouTube profile picture be?

YouTube recommends 800×800 pixels. It displays as a circle on the channel page and in comments, so avoid placing key content in the corners. JPG or PNG both work; GIF is not supported.

Can I resize a PNG with a transparent background?

This tool outputs JPEG, which doesn't support transparency — transparent areas become black. If you need a transparent PNG output, use this as your dimensions reference and export from your image editor at the target size as PNG.

Does the image get uploaded to your server?

No — resizing happens entirely in your browser using the HTML5 Canvas API. Your image is never sent to any server.
